Location: Totara Grove is located in the much sought after Taupiri district, at 1314 Orini Road, right in the centre of the Orini village, 30 kms to Morrinsville and Hamilton. Orini is an extremely well serviced district, benefits from good schooling and is centrally located with easy access to all adjoining regions, including Auckland within an hour's drive. Access to Totara Grove is gained from the north via Taupiri village and left onto Orini Road. Access from Morrinsville is via Tahuna Morrinsville Road and left into Whitikahu Road at Mangateparu and right onto Orini Road near Whitikahu. Contour , Soil Type and Subdivision: Totara Grove is generally all flat with land sloping down to the Tauhei stream on the eastern boundary. The soil type is described as free draining, shallow consolidated peat over sand. The property is intensively subdivided into 81 paddocks, with five wire race fencing and two wire electric fencing between paddocks. The races are all 6 - 7 meters wide with very good surfaces. There are 14 foot steel gates onto the races and electric tapes between paddocks. Water Supply: Totara Grove receives its water from three bores. One bore is located north of the farm, across Orini Road, by way of an easement. This is a deepwell pump which supplies 2700 litres per hour. The second bore is located at the southern end of the farm. This bore has a chemical filtration system and supplies 4050 litres per hour. The third supply comes from a bore on the lease block. Water is delivered by way of a 60mm mainline and 32mm laterals. Most paddocks are 2.5 hectares in size and have 2 troughs in each. There is an inline dispenser system located at the cowshed and alkathene is medium density, designed to handle bloat treatment. There are three 5000 gallon tanks, two at the cowshed and one beside the bore at the Woodward Road end of the farm. All water is pumped to the cowshed and then out to the farm. Domestic water is supplied from the Orini Road bore. Fertiliser: Totara Grove has received consistent applications of fertiliser, in line with regular soil tests and fertiliser recommendations. Livestock: In the 06 / 07 season new management took the farm to a higher stocking rate of 420 cows, producing 133,000 kgs of ms from the 137 ha. The farm grew 45 tonnes of DM pasture silage and 200 tonnes of DM maize silage. 150 units of nitrogen were used with no other feed purchased. Rising 1 year stock were grazed on the farm until mid May. In the 07 / 08 season Totara Grove has gained the 60 ha lease block and lifted the cow numbers to 615 wintered with a target of 200,000 kgs ms.
