Description

Like a fine wine aged to perfection, this historic homestead is the epitome of a romantic country villa sitting majestically amongst nearly five acres of private, established gardens and a boutique vineyard. Built in 1866 for Judge John Rogan, Te Makiri is a showpiece of its time, built of pit-sawn heart Kauri, sitting proudly on an elevated site with superb views of the Kaipara river and surrounding country side. Lovingly and sympathetically updated for modern family living, this grand home has retained many of its original features including four open fireplaces, working coal range, kauri panelling, intricate bargeboards and a master bedroom with balcony and fireplace. The homestead also boasts a beautiful farmhouse kitchen, separate dining room, four double bedrooms (all with views), a kauri panelled study, large verandahs on three sides, and a fresh water bore. Newer additions to the grounds include a boutique vineyard with 1000 Syrah vines which could potentially produce up to 5000 bottles of your own wine label a year. A modern 300 square metre hydroponic glass house, a separate barn workshop and studio space, and well-established gardens and landscaping provide abundant business or hobby opportunities. Only a mile from the heart of Helensville and just 35 minutes from Auckland, Te Makiri offers the calm and privacy of country living within walking distance of supermarkets, schools and cafes. A truly unique opportunity; Te Makiri awaits your discovery. Historical information: Te Makiri is one of New Zealand's best remaining examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture, a style prized for its craftsmanship and beauty. The homestead was built as a grand family home for prominent local judge and land magistrate John Rogan in 1866. The architect was James Wright. Originally at the heart of a 583 acre estate including three farms and a race track, it was sited to command sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and to the Kaipara River. Today Te Makiri still sits on its own 5 acres. And with the many English specimen trees planted when it was newly-built now reaching maturity, its park-like grounds are more beautiful than ever. The homestead itself is built from heart Kauri timber harvested in Dargaville and pit-sawn by hand at Helensville's Te Awaroa mill. The intricate bargeboards which frame the dormers are each carved from a single length of Kauri. It's rich history and the quality of the construction means Te Makiri is listed by the Historic Places Trust.
